2006 Dodge Caravan Highlights

"Dodge's popular minivan is built from the same design as Chrysler's Town & Country. It comes as the regular-length Caravan or extended-length Grand Caravan in SE and SXT trim. All have 7-passenger seating. The regular-length SE has a 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine or an optional 3.3 V6. Regular-length SXT and Grand SE have the 3.3 V6. Grand SXT gets a 3.8 V6. All come with automatic transmissions. Traction control is standard on Grand SXT, unavailable elsewhere. No antiskid system is offered. ABS is standard on Grands, optional on SXT regular. A driver knee airbag is standard on all, and head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows are optional on all but the 4-cyl SE.
Standard on the Grand SXT is Dodge's Stow 'n Go 2nd- and 3rd-row seats that fold into the floorwells. With the seats raised, the wells provide covered storage space. Other available features include power sliding side doors, power liftgate, power-adjustable pedals, rear DVD entertainment, navigation system, and Chrysler's UConnect hands-free cell phone link. Newly available is an AM/FM/DVD radio that plays CDs and DVD Audio discs."

2006 Dodge Caravan News

"Chrysler Group is determined to protect its dominant share of the minivan market. That's why it spent a reported $400 million on making extensive underskin changes to accommodate the new Stow 'n Go seats. Will the company spend still more to put Stow 'n Go in its regular-length minivans? We're doubtful, because the shorties generate far fewer sales than the extended models, so any investment would take longer to recoup. Still, it could happen.
What will definitely happen, say our moles, is some sort of makeover for all Chrysler/Dodge minivans come 2007 or '08. This could amount to a clean-sheet redo, which would be in line with Chrysler's reported goal of improving its minivans' performance in government crash tests."

2006 Dodge Caravan Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Long the choice as the family hauler, Minivans are easily the smartest use of space for passengers and cargo. These vehicles offer a fantastic blend of comfort, convenience, and safety features for the modern family.
Our Best Buys include Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, and Honda Odyssey. Our Recommended pick is Toyota Sienna.
Kia Sedona is new or significantly redesigned."

2006 Dodge Caravan Write Ups

Acceleration
"Weak 4-cyl feels even more lethargic than its 11.3 sec 0-60-mph time suggests. The 3.3 V6 is OK in regular-length Caravan. Grands need the smooth, strong 3.8. Automatic transmission works well with all engines."

Value
"These Dodge and related Chrysler minivans are among the class leaders for convenience and utility. Toyota's Sienna and Honda's Odyssey are their only real rivals for all-around appeal. Add in lower base prices than those import brands, and Caravan earns our Best Buy rating."

Ride
"Grands smooth out bumps better than regular-length models, but all Caravans ride comfortably."

Economy
Test Town & Country with 3.8 V6 averaged 18.5 mpg; expect about the same for similar Grand Caravan. Overburdened 3.3 should average 15-17 mpg in Grands. Test regular-length 4-cyl averaged 19.8 in city/highway mix. All use regular-grade fuel.

Noise
"Heavy crosswinds and highway-speed cruising elevate wind rush, and certain road surfaces bring out marked tire noise, but neither is prominent enough to disturb conversation. SE has less sound insulation than other models, and its 4-cyl engine is louder, more gruff than V6s."

Comfort - Front
"Low step-in height, wide doorways. Fine head, shoulder room. Seats supportive, though taller drivers may wish for more leg room. Rear headrests can obstruct outward vision slightly. Power-adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to sit farther from the steering-wheel airbag."

Comfort - Rear
"Generous head, knee, and foot clearance in all. Grand SXT with stowable seats has somewhat less leg room and skimpy toe room. Override feature allows power side doors to be easily closed or opened by hand."

Controls
"Gauges unobstructed. Controls generally easy to decipher, close to driver. Interior materials a sensible example of durable, attractive surfaces."

Cargo Room
"Regular-length models have tight cargo space with all seats in place. Extended's available Stow 'n Go seats fold easily into front and rear floorwells to lay flush with floor. With seats in place, 2nd-row floorwells provide about 12 cu ft of handy, covered storage. Rear well a boon to cargo space with 3rd row raised. Available power liftgate useful, reverses direction at slightest obstacle."
