2006 Dodge Magnum Highlights

"Dodge's full-size Magnum is a wagon companion to the Dodge Charger and is simiarl to the Chrysler 300. For 2006, Magnum adds high-performance versions.
Magnum seats five, offers rear- or all-wheel-drive, and comes in has four trim levels: SE with a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6, SXT with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6, R/T with a 340-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8, and the high-performance SRT8 with a 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V8. AWD is available on SXT and R/T. The 5.7 V8 has Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders under light throttle conditions to save fuel. All have automatic transmissions: a 4-speed with the 2.7 V6 and on rear-drive Magnum SXT, a 5-speed on other versions.
Four-wheel disc brakes are standard. ABS and antiskid/traction control are optional on the Magnum SE, standard on other models. Available on all are front side airbags and front and rear head-protecting curtain side airbags. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on SE versions, 18s are optional on the SEs and standard on everything else but the SRT8s, which have 20s. AWD SXT, R/T, and SRT8 models add firmer suspension tuning. SRT8s also have Brembo-brand brakes and special seats and trim.
Split folding rear seatbacks are standard. Magnum has a rear liftgate without separate-opening glass. Also available are adjustable pedals, satellite radio, and Chrysler's UConnect hands-free wireless cell phone link. Leather upholstery is standard on R/T and SRT8, optional on the others. "

2006 Dodge Magnum News

"Though little near-term change is expected for Magnum, Detroit moles report that Dodge will revive the Challenger name for a new, er, challenger to Ford's latest hot-selling Mustang. Expected for 2009, it's a flashback to 1970, when Dodge belatedly entered the ""ponycar"" market established by the original Mustangs. The new Challenger will reportedly be a 2-dr spinoff of the redesigned Charger and Magnum that are also slated for '09. All three Dodges, plus a redone Chrysler 300, will be based on the next generation of Chrysler Group's rear-drive LX platform. Though Challenger design and engineering are still a long ways from being finalized, you can bet Hemi V8 power will be in the picture. And a company spokesperson has already pegged sales at 60,000-70,000 a year. Stay tuned."

2006 Dodge Magnum Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Cars comprise the biggest passenger sedans and wagons. Large, inside and out, they also include the only 6-passenger cars. Large Cars offer lots of metal for the money and are dominated by domestic brands.
Our Best Buys include Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego, and Toyota Avalon. At this time we have no Recommended picks."

2006 Dodge Magnum Write Ups

Acceleration
"SE with 2.7-liter V6 feels tepid, requires lots of passing room; Dodge says 11.3 sec 0-60 mph. The 3.5 V6 is OK in town, but has only adequate passing punch. Dodge claims 9.3 sec with rear drive; AWD SXT felt little different. Test R/T did 5.8 sec 0-60, showed ready muscle from any speed. Multi-Displacement System switches between 4 and 8 cylinders without interrupting power flow, but some testers say it causes a slight driveline shudder. Dodge says SRT8 models do 0-60 mph in around 5 sec, which seemed credible. SRT8s aren't rated for towing, but other V8s are good for up to 3800 lb."

Value
"Magnum proves aggressive styling and functionality are not mutually exclusive. The 2.7 V6 can't move this big wagon with much verve, but the 3.5 V6 offers acceptable performance, and the R/T and SRT8 are muscle cars. Cargo versatility, passenger room, available all-wheel drive, and solid construction inside and out make most any Magnum an outstanding value."

Ride
"Little difference between Magnum and more-luxurious Chrysler 300. Ride generally smooth, composed, but rippled pavement triggers annoying jiggling, especially in V8 models with their firmer suspensions. SRT8s have firmest ride, may be too stiff for some buyers. All versions tested suffered unwanted float over highway-speed dips and swells."

Economy
"No opportunity to measure with 2.7 V6 or AWD. Extended-use-test rear-drive Magnum R/T returned 16.0 mpg in first 11,556 mi. Other test rear-drive R/Ts averaged 15.9 mpg in mostly city driving, 18.4 mpg with more highway work. Test Magnum SRT8 averaged 14.3 mpg. Dodge recommends 87-octane fuel for the V6 engines, 89 octane for the 5.7 V8, and 91 octane for the 6.1-liter V8. Note: AWD versions and R/T have 19-gal fuel capacity vs. 18."

Noise
"Noticeable roar from V6s during acceleration. V8s make throaty full-throttle growl, but are quiet enough in gentle cruising. Magnum suffers more road ruckus than 300 or Charger, mostly because of open rear cargo area vs. closed-off trunk, and R/Ts have more tire roar than other Magnums/Chargers. Wind rush evident at highway speeds."

Comfort - Front
"Spacious. Ample head and leg room. Generously sized seats, but flat cushions allow occupants to slide during aggressive cornering. SRT8 address this problem with sport buckets that have good lateral support, outstanding comfort. Thick front roof pillars block some drivers' view to front corners. Magnum's low roofline obstructs visibility to sides and rear."

Comfort - Rear
"Easy entry/exit. Great room for two. Plenty of leg and toe space, even with front seats pushed well back. Head clearance ample. Enough thigh support for long-trip comfort, but middle rider must straddle bulky driveline hump."

Controls
"Instruments large, easy to read, but steering-wheel rim cuts into view of turn-signal arrows and gauges for fuel and temperature. Most controls within easy reach, though some are too low to easily adjust while driving. Navigation system simpler than most to operate. Interior materials a slight grade below those of 300, but feel solid enough with nice array of padded panels--entirely appropriate for the price level."

Cargo Room
"Magnum's wagon shape means lots of room, but low roofline forces carrying tall objects flat; available cargo nets/bins handy for small items. Versatility enhanced by standard split folding 60/40 rear seatbacks, but they don't lay completely flat."
