| 2006 Ford Focus Highlights |
|
"Ford's smallest car is largely unchanged for 2006. Focus comes as a 2-dr ZX3 hatchback; with four doors as the ZX4 sedan, ZX5 hatchback, and ZXW wagon. Price levels ascend through S, SE, and SES designations. All have 4-cyl engines. A 136-hp 2.0-liter teams with manual or automatic transmission except in ZX3 S and the sporty ZX4 ST sedan, which are manual only. The ST has a 151-hp 2.3, plus sport suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. ST also includes ABS, which is optional otherwise. Traction control is available for SE, SES, and ST models. Wheel diameters are 16 inches for ST and SES models, 15 elsewhere. All Focuses include a height-adjustable driver seat and split folding rear seatbacks. Head- and torso-protecting front side airbags are available linewide. Other options include sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. New for 2006 is a Street Appearance Package. Aimed at young tuner car performance fans, it delivers a rear spoiler and modified front/rear fascias, all in body color, plus fog lights and chrome exhaust tip."

| 2006 Ford Focus News |
|
"Ford has given up on ""world cars"" because they literally don't pay in
some markets. That's why the North American Focus is merely updated for '05
while Europe gets clean-sheet models. And that's apparently how things will
stay. According to Detroit insiders, the North American Focus gets a substantial
makeover for 2008, but on the current ""C170"" platform rather than the newer
Euro-market ""C1"" design. Alas, no word yet on specifics for '08 or possible
changes before then.
But Ford has confirmed the addition of a smaller, less-expensive
vehicle to supplement Focus in the bargain-wheels market. The company is
so far mum on what it will be and when it's due, but sources expect the newcomer
for 2007 or '08 as a spinoff of the Brazilian-built EcoSport, a compact crossover-style
SUV based on Ford's European Fiesta small car. Mazda, Ford's Japanese affiliate,
is said to be in charge of the next-generation Fiesta and, by extension,
the new U.S. model."

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based
on size, price, and market position. Compact Cars comprise the smallest
passengers cars. These vehicles range from tiny economy models to slightly
larger, popularly priced sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons. Our Best Buys
include Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Pontiac Vibe/Toyota
Matrix twins. Our Recommended picks include Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus,
Hyundai Elantra, Kia Spectra, and Toyota Corolla.
New or significantly redesigned
models include Chevrolet HHR, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and Volkswagen Golf
and Jetta."

| 2006 Ford Focus Write Ups |
|
Acceleration
"ST 2.3-liter has adequate low-rpm power, immediate throttle response. Base 2.0
has only adequate power for highway merging or ascending long grades. Automatic
transmission dulls off-the-line snap. Manual transmission has smooth shift/clutch
action."
Value
"Focus is fun to drive in any form, though it lacks the refinement of the Volkswagen
Jetta and the outright sportiness of the Mazda 3. But it's priced to sell, and
an array of body styles and useful options give it broad appeal and help Focus
clinch a Recommended ribbon."
Ride
"ST's sport suspension gives firm, but impressively compliant, ride. Other models
somewhat softer, thump less over bumps, but also feel less stable at highway
speed. No opportunity to evaluate with 15-inch wheels."
Economy
Test ST averaged 20.5 mpg in strictly city driving. No opportunity to measure with 2.0-liter engine.
Noise
"ST exhibits little road rumble, but tires slap intrusively over sharp ridges.
Sporty exhaust note is loud in high-rpm driving. All models exhibit noticeable
wind rush around front side windows."
Comfort - Front
"Comfortable, supportive seats stand chair-height, yet head room outstanding.
Leg space fine for class. ST and SES models include tilt/telescope steering wheel
for extra measure of driver comfort. Large door openings ease entry/exit."
Comfort - Rear
"Better head and leg room than most compacts, though sunroof's housing trims
head space for tall riders. Entry/exit a squeeze on ZX3s, much easier on 4-dr
models, though their rear doors should open wider."
Controls
"Well-arranged dashboard has easy-read gauges and mostly intuitive, handy minor
controls. Good cabin materials and workmanship for the price."
Cargo Room
"Sedan's trunklid uses space-saving strut-type hinges. All models have generous
cargo holds with low liftovers, plus split folding rear seatbacks for versatility;
available premium-stereo subwoofer eats up space. Abundant interior storage includes
6-CD holder in dash and ceiling console in nonsunroof models."
