2006 Ford Mustang Highlights

"An option package that dresses base models in GT trim highlights the 2006 Mustang. Base and GT models come as coupes and as convertibles with a power fabric top and heated glass rear window. Base models have a 210-hp V6, GTs a 300-hp V8. Both engines team with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed automatic. Base and GT Mustangs come in Deluxe and Premium trim; base models also offer lower-priced Standard versions. All have 4-wheel disc brakes; ABS with traction control is standard on GTs, optional on base models. No antiskid system is available, but front side airbags designed for head and torso protection are available. Newly available for base Premium models is the Pony Package that includes GT-style grille-mounted fog lamps, rear spoiler, and 17-inch wheels and tires. Base models come with 16-inch wheels. Newly optional for GTs are 18s. Coupes have 50/50 split folding rear seatbacks. Leather upholstery is standard on GT Premiums, available for other models except the base Standard. Due to join the lineup later in the 2006 model year as an '07 is the Shelby Cobra GT500 with a supercharged V8 of more than 450 hp. "

2006 Ford Mustang News

"The next step for the newest Mustang breed should be the addition of high-performance SVT Cobra models. Ford's financial recovery efforts make exact timing unclear, but the company is likely trying to have them ready as soon as possible, perhaps for 2006. Specifics are unknown right now, but the Cobras will likely feature an upgraded chassis with independent rear suspension, plus special cosmetics, larger wheels and tires, and a V8 with something like 400 hp. In addition, Ford says it may add other ""package models"" in the near future, such as a new GT-based Mach 1.
There's also word that Ford is already working to tweak mainstream Mustangs for improved ride comfort and less noise, vibration and harshness. Timing is unclear here too, but a leading industry trade paper has quoted Ford officials as all but promising some chassis ""upgrades"" fairly soon--including a possible independent rear suspension as standard. As noted, the newest base and GT Mustangs use a solid rear axle, but are designed to accept the bolt-on independent setup developed for the Cobra. Stay tuned."

2006 Ford Mustang Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. The Sporty/Performance Car class consists of two-seat roadsters, 4-cyl hatchbacks, and V8 muscle cars. Regardless of configuration, all have an emphasis on affordable performance.
Our Best Buys include Ford Mustang Mazda Miata, and Scion tC. Our Recommended picks are Acura RSX, Honda S2000, Mini Cooper, Nissan 350Z, and Pontiac GTO.
New or significantly redesigned models include Mitsubishi Eclipse and Pontiac Solstice."

2006 Ford Mustang Write Ups

Acceleration
"Test V6 coupe ran 0-60 mph in a brisk 6.9 sec with automatic, but that transmission dulls passing response with reluctant downshifts. And V6 or V8, Mustang's automatic lacks a manual shift gate. GTs are fast--Ford says around 5.2 sec 0-60 with either transmission--but V8 feels a bit weak below 3000 rpm, needs manual transmission for best overall performance. Convertibles weigh some 175 lb more than like-equipped coupes, so are a bit slower."

Value
"Our Best Buy nod is mainly for the GT versions, but V6 Mustangs don't lack bang-for-the-buck appeal. They rival some sporty imports on price, though not agility, refinement, or overall quality. GTs deliver great ""go"" for relatively little dough, and all convertibles blend value, verve, and nominal 4-seat practicality. Mustang's main letdowns are low-rent cabin appointments and occasional workmanship lapses."

Ride
"GTs only a bit firmer than base models. All absorb small bumps with little shock, but can transmit sharp pavement breaks, and some testers noticed wander along rain grooves. Base models prone to slight float over large moguls. Convertibles impressively tight, solid on most surfaces."

Economy
"Automatic-transmission V6 coupe averaged 19.3 mpg, even with gas-eating performance tests. Manual-transmission GT coupes logged 14.6-16.3 mpg in less-strenuous mixed driving. Test automatic GT coupe returned 14.9. Test GT convertible with manual transmission averaged 19.2 mpg in mostly highway driving. V6 or GT, Ford recommends regular-grade fuel."

Noise
"Wind rush reasonably muffled, even in convertibles, but there's marked engine noise and coarse-surface tire thrum. V6 growls, booms unpleasantly as revs rise. V8 has throaty muscle car tone."

Comfort - Front
"Good head and leg room, but cozy feel from low seats, high dashtop and windowsills. Driver comfort enhanced by standard tilt steering wheel, height-adjustable seat, nicely contoured backrest, but knees collide easily with hard door panels and console. Shoulder belts don't adjust for height, a needless cost cut. Outward vision good in coupes; convertible top leaves wide over-the-shoulder blind spots. Long doors complicate tight-quarters entry/exit."

Comfort - Rear
"Inhospitable for adults. Little room, skimpy seat, back-straining entry/exit."

Controls
"Main gauges in chrome-ringed tunnels can be hard to read by day, have overly styled graphics. Manual shifting awkward with console cupholders in use. Cabin has eye appeal, but too much hard plastic even at this price level; console lid, door inserts among the few padded surfaces. Switchgear feels cut-rate. Intermittent dashboard squeaks plagued two test coupes. Convertible-top roof latches balky, require fair muscle to lock or unlock."

Cargo Room
"Cargo space good for the class, but not by sedan standards. Trunklids open wide on nonintruding hinges, but aperture size, shape preclude bulky items. Cabin storage sparse; door map pockets almost useless."
