| 2006 Honda Civic Highlights |
|
"America's best-selling compact car is redesigned
for 2006 with new styling, new safety equipment, and more power. Civic
returns in 4-dr sedan and 2-dr coupe body styles, plus a gas/electric
Hybrid model. Compared to the 2001-2005 generation, the sedan is larger outside,
but smaller in some dimensions inside. The coupe is slightly smaller
inside and out. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are new to Civic and
are standard on all '06 models. ABS also is newly standard on all. Sedans
and coupes come in DX, LX, and top-line EX trim. A sporty Si coupe replaces
an Si hatchback. The Hybrid comes only as a sedan. All have a 4-cyl engine.
DX, LX, and EX models have 140 hp vs. 115-127 hp previously. The Si has 197
hp, up from 160. The Hybrid combines a gas engine and an electric motor for
110 hp; the previous Civic Hybrid made 93 hp. The Hybrid automatically runs
on one or both of its power sources to balance acceleration and fuel economy.
The system recharges itself; no plug-in charging is necessary. DX,
LX, and EX models use a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic.
The Si comes only with a 6-speed manual. The Hybrid has a continuously variable
automatic transmission (CVT) that provides near-infinite drive ratios.
EX, Si, and Hybrid have 4-wheel disc brakes. The Si has a sport suspension,
uprated brakes, and a limited-slip differential designed to direct more power
to the outside front wheel in a turn to aid handling. An 18-inch wheel and
tire package is a dealer-installed option for any model. Front torso side
airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard. A navigation
system with voice activation is available on EX, Hybrid, and Si. New interior
features include a two-tier instrument panel with an analog tachometer ahead
of the driver and a separately housed digital speedometer directly above.
Compared
to the previous Civic sedan, the '06 is 3.2 inches longer in wheelbase and
about 1.5 inches longer and wider overall. It loses 1.4 inches of rear leg
room and nearly a half inch of front head room. The coupe's wheelbase is
2 inches shorter than the sedan's, but 1.2 inches longer than the preceding
coupe's. It loses an inch of front head room and 2.5 inches rear leg room.
The sedan gains about 180 lb over 2005 models, the coupe about 145. "

"Sources still see the new Civic spawning
a sporty compact wagon for 2007 or '08. Long rumored under the name Latitude,
it would answer the likes of Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, Chrysler's PT Cruiser
and the new Chevrolet HHR, but is not yet a done deal.
Not so Honda's Fit
minicar, which comes to the U.S. next spring as an early-'07 entry. Taller
than Civic, but shorter and slimmer, this 4-dr hatchback reportedly uses
a 1.5-liter twincam 4-cyl engine and will be priced from around $12,000.
Fit has long been a Honda mainstay in Japan and other world markets, where
it's sometimes sold as the Jazz. We think Jazz will be the name here, especially
as Honda hopes to woo young first-time buyers away from Toyota's Scion and
other budget-priced small cars."

Cobalt, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Spectra, and Toyota Corolla.
New
or significantly redesigned models include Chevrolet HHR, Hyundai Accent,
Kia Rio, and Volkswagen Golf and Jetta."

Value
"The Si coupe version excepted, Civic is not be as sporty as some in this class,
but it's remarkably friendly to drive and inspires confidence in most any road
or traffic condition. Civic is more comfortable than most rivals, despite being
slightly less roomy than some. With its futuristic shapes, the interior is innovative,
entertaining even, and only the navigation system sacrifices easy functionality.
The Hybrid model is a penalty free choice for the environmentally conscious willing
to pay its higher initial cost. Overall, no competitor matches the particular
fusion of reliability, engineering, style, and value Honda brings to this market
segment. Civic continues for '06 as a compact car Best Buy. "
Ride
"Sedans take bumps in stride, with good absorbency, little float or wallow. LX
and EX versions especially stable at highway speeds. Coupes feel choppier on
uneven surfaces, but even firm-suspension Si never jars. "
Noise
"Sedans near top of class in suppression of road, wind ruckus. Hybrid's CVT promotes
pronounced engine noise in rapid acceleration, but some testers find 140-hp engine
noisy as well. Coupes do not isolate nearly as well as sedans, though Si's snarling
engine/exhaust note is race-car invigorating. "
Comfort - Front
"Tilt/telescope steering column, height-adjustable driver seat are standard,
help tailor accommodating driving position. Seats blend support, comfort; Si's
buttressed for glued-in-place feel in fast cornering. No excess head room for
tall occupants, especially beneath sunroof housing. Long front roof pillars impede
outward view to corners; long dashtop shelf, sloping nose complicate judging
distance in close quarters. Some sunlight conditions trigger annoying windshield
reflections. "
Comfort - Rear
"Sedans have adequate adult head room. Knee space tight with front seats more
than halfway back. Toe room uncompromised unless front cushions near lowest point.
Flat floor aids overall comfort, as does firm, well-contoured seat. Sedan doors
open wide for good entry/exit. Coupe's tiny, hard-to-access rear area best left
to toddlers. "
Controls
"Adventurous instrument panel design combines analog, digital features to good
overall effect. Speedometer's digits are in driver's line of sight for viewing
without taking focus off road. Climate controls within easy reach, though audio
switchgear requires longer stretch. Navigation system takes time to master, has
undersized buttons, and absorbs too many audio functions. But programming via
predetermined voice commands a plus. Navigation screen difficult to read in changing
light. Door-mounted power window and mirror switches conveniently backlit. Controls
move with smooth precision, cabin materials a laudable mix of high-grade plastics,
fabrics; EX, Hybrid have richer trim, upmarket feel. "
Cargo Room
"Sedan has wide, tall trunk with generous opening, low liftover. Coupe trunk
has same attributes, but slightly less volume. On both, lid hinges intrude on
cargo area. All but Hybrid have folding rear seatback. All doors have map pockets,
cabins boast a plethora of storage bins, cubbies."
