| 2006 Hyundai Accent Highlights |
|
"Hyundai's smallest car is redesigned for 2006, adding size, power, and a host of standard safety features. Accent comes as a 2-dr hatchback in GS and SE trim, and as a 9.2-in.-longer 4-dr sedan in GLS form. The hatchback was introduced midyear as a 2007 model. All are larger than the 2002-2005 Accents. The sole engine is a 4-cyl with 110 hp vs. the previous 104 hp. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, a 4-speed automatic is optional. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are newly standard, as are front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags. GS and GLS models have 14-inch wheels; 15s are available on GLS. SEs have 16s. Air conditioning is a stand-alone option on GS and GLS. It's included in a Premium Sport Package for GLS that also adds power windows, power heated mirrors, and keyless entry. Those features are standard on SEs. Hyundai's warranty is among the industry's most generous at 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper and 10/10,000 powertrain, with 5-years/unlimited roadside assistance. It shares its underskin design with the Rio from Hyundai's Kia division, but differs in styling, content mix, pricing, and warranty coverage. This evaluation is based on preview test drives. "

| 2006 Hyundai Accent Write Ups |
|
Acceleration
"Automatic-transmission sedan only example made available for test so far. It's
adequate around town, but struggles to reach freeway speed and climb long grades.
Expect manual-transmission version to be livelier. At least the automatic downshifts
promptly, smoothly for passing."
Value
"Accent one-ups corporate sibling Kia Rio with standard antilock 4-wheel disc
brakes--and bests most class rivals with standard front torso and head-protecting
curtain side airbags. It's hardly quick, but it does deliver good fuel economy,
solid build, reasonable interior space, and more equipment than its low price
implies. Hyundai's strong warranty adds to Accent's appeal among entry-level
compacts."
Ride
"Comfortable over smaller bumps, but soft suspension tuning allows moderate bounding
over large high-speed humps. Surprisingly solid structural feel belies low price,
enhances impression of ride comfort."
Economy
No opportunity to measure Accent. Kia Rio LX sedan is similar to Accent GLS sedan; automatic-transmission test example averaged 27.1 mpg.
Noise
"Engine a bit boomy from around 4000 rpm on up, but is never objectionably loud.
Wind noise modest for class, but coarse-surface tire thrum fairly high."
Comfort - Front
"Fairly roomy for the class. Six-footer head clearance, good leg space. Seats
relatively high, seem comfortable, but need better thigh support. Comfort aided
by standard height-adjustable driver seat, tilt steering wheel. Good all-around
visibility."
Comfort - Rear
"Head room, foot space better than class norm. Pushing front seats well back
squeezes leg room, but knees won't dig into seatbacks. Entry/exit just OK."
Controls
"Dashboard shows style; good design with clear gauges and simple, logical controls.
Cloth upholstery has unexpectedly classy look and feel. Plastic panels look nice
too, but a few feel budget-grade flimsy to the touch, and padded surfaces are
scarce."
Cargo Room
"Shallow trunk opening precludes bulky items, but folding rear seatbacks help
compensate. Cabin storage not great, but front door map pockets include handy
bottle holders."
