2006 Hyundai Sonata Highlights

"Hyundai's midsize sedan is redesigned for 2006 with new styling, more power, and standard curtain side airbags. Compared to the 1999-2005 model, Sonata gains 2 inches in wheelbase, 2.2 inches in overall length, and about 2 inches in height. Passenger space grows in every dimension, the biggest gain being 1.2 inches more rear leg room. Trunk volume gains 2.2 cu ft. Sonata continues with a base 4-cyl GL model, uplevel GLS in 4-cyl or V6 form, and top-line LX V6. Both engines are new. The 2.4-liter 4-cyl has 162 hp vs. 138 for the previous 2.4. The V6 grows from a 170-hp 2.7-liter to a 235-hp 3.3. Transmissions comprise a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic for the 4-cyl, a 5-speed automatic for the V6. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and antiskid/traction control are standard. So are front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags. GL and GLS have 16-inch wheels; 17s are standard on LX and optinal on GLS V6. The LX includes heated leather seats, power driver seat, and automatic climate control. Like all Hyundais, Sonata comes with one of the industry's longest warranties: 5-year/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper, 10-year/100,000-mi powertrain, and 5/unlimited roadside assistance. "

2006 Hyundai Sonata News

"Hyundai will build only V6 Sonatas at the company's new plant in Alabama-the first-ever U.S. plant for the South Korean automaker. Four-cylinder will be assembled in Korea for the time being. Eventually Hyundai plans to move 4-cylinder assembly to the U.S. plant but will continue to source the smaller engine from Korea.
When pressed, Hyundai officials reluctantly said that the company had no plans for a hybrid version, but were studying the viability of such a model. Late in 2006 or perhaps early 2007, XM radio with a free three-month subscription will become standard. Hyundai is also considering adding an optional navigation system, but was not willing to discuss when such an option would become available.
This new Sonata will serve as the basis for an all-new Santa Fe that will appear in the fall of 2006. The two will be built side-by-side at the Alabama plant. "

2006 Hyundai Sonata Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.
Our Best Buys include Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks include Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Outback and Legacy.
New or significantly redesigned models include Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Volkswagen Passat."

2006 Hyundai Sonata Write Ups

Acceleration
"Four-cyl weak from a stop, lacks reserve power for passing. Strong V6 more than adequate for most driving. Test GLS V6 did 6.9 sec 0-60 mph. Both transmissions shift smoothly, but hesitate briefly before downshifting; V6's 5-speed tends to hunt between gears on hilly terrain. "

Value
"Sonata's engineering pales next to the Honda Accord's. It's not as refined as the Toyota Camry and not as sporty as the Nissan Altima. Its strength is a crafty combination of comfort, roominess, mainstream design, and everyday performance at a price that compels shoppers to consider it. Sealing Sonata as a Recommended pick is the presence of head-protecting curtain side airbags, antilock brakes, and antiskid control as standard on every model, not just the most-expensive versions."

Ride
"Sometimes struggles to balance control, comfort. Compliant over small surface imperfections, but reacts harshly to sharp bumps, ridges, especially with 17-inch tires. Wavy pavement promotes bound, wallow, particularly as speed increases. "

Economy
"Test automatic-transmission 4-cyl GLS averaged 25.9 mpg in mostly highway driving. Test GLS V6 averaged 18.8 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, 15.6 including gas-eating performance tests. Extended-use-test LX averaging 21.0 mpg over its first 5177 miles. Hyundai recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines."

Noise
"Nice suppression of wind rush. Engine note rises with speed, but isn't annoying. Tires thump over ridges, thrum obtrusively on coarse surfaces, especially with 17-inch tires. In subfreezing temperatures, extended-use test car emitted occasional groaning sounds from rear suspension. "

Comfort - Front
"Sufficient space for large adults. Good driving position, aided by LX's standard tilt/telescope steering wheel, though some testers have difficulty finding comfortable seatback angle. Thin roof pillars, upright driving position contribute to excellent outward visibility."

Comfort - Rear
"Enough head, leg room for large adults. Wide door openings, expansive footwells ease entry/exit. Seats comfortable, though firmer padding would enhance long-distance support. "

Controls
"Simple, white-on-black gauges easy to read in any lighting condition. Major controls fall readily to hand. Cabins highlighted by soft, padded surfaces--even storage bins are lined. Still, interior panels not as solid feeling, materials not as rich feeling as in Honda Accord, Toyota Camry. "

Cargo Room
"Ample trunk space. Lockable, split folding rear seatbacks, nonintrusive strut-type trunk hinges. Abundant interior storage highlighted by generous glovebox, two-tier center-armrest console, and large door map pockets."
