| 2006 Jaguar XK Series Highlights |
|
"Jaguar's coupes and convertibles are little-changed as early 2006 arrivals. XK8 uses a 294-hp 4.2-liter V8, XKR a 390-hp supercharged version. A 6-speed automatic is the only transmission. Standard are front side airbags, antiskid/traction control, ABS, and 18-inch wheels. XKRs have a mesh grille, unique hood, rear spoiler, and sport suspension. A navigation system and self-leveling xenon headlamps are standard for XKRs, available for XK8's. Jaguar's Adaptive Cruise Control, designed to maintain a set following distance, is optional for all. New for '06 is a pair of Victory Limited Edition packages for coupes. The XK8's Victory package includes upgraded leather upholstery, carbon-fiber cabin accents, a wireless connection to cell phones, special exterior trim, and 19-inch chrome wheels. The XKR Victory package adds 20-inch wheels and uprated brakes. "

"Sources say redesigned XKs will bow in 2006,
possibly as early-'07 models for the U.S. The Advanced Lightweight Concept
coupe, seen at the '05 North American International Show, is said to be an
accurate sneak preview of what Jaguar calls Project X150. In particular,
the concept's styling signals a shift away from retro design toward a more
modern, edgy look that's still recognizably Jaguar. Wheelbase reportedly
stays about the same, but length, width and maybe height see modest increases,
partly for increased back-seat room. The convertible's fabric top will power
beneath a metal cover instead of riding on the body.
Following the path of
Jaguar's latest XJ sedans, the new sporty 2-drs will switch to a unique all-aluminum
unibody structure, a change said to pare curb weight by some 200 pounds.
Suspension hardware and electronic systems will come from the XJ line. Ditto
powertrains, though there's talk of horsepower going up to around 320 for
the base V8 and to 450 on the supercharged version. High-power XKR-R models
with upwards of 500 hp have been rumored for 2008, but may be stillborn unless
Jaguar improves sales and profitability in short order. Right now, the Ford-owned
British automaker is bleeding red ink. We'll be getting more XK info soon,
so keep checking back with us."

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle
into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Offering
more power and style than typical Sporty/Performance vehicles, Premium Sporty/Performance
Cars usually cost much more and have more comfort and convenience equipment.
Two-passenger convertibles and 4-seat coupes rule the roost in this class.
Our
Best Buy is Chevrolet Corvette. Our Recommended picks include BMW Z4 and
Mercedes-Benz CLK."

| 2006 Jaguar XK Series Write Ups |

Acceleration
"Both V8s work well with the 6-speed automatic to deliver a smooth rush of power
from any speed, though manual shifting requires negotiating Jaguar's unusual
J-shaped shift gate. Test XKR coupe did 5.5 sec 0-60 mph. No opportunity to time
XK8, but expect about 6.5 sec 0-60. "
Value
"Interior room is tight and prices are steep. And without a retractable hardtop,
XK convertibles lose out to the Lexus SC 430, Mercedes-Benz SL, and Cadillac
XLR for solid-roof security. Still, these Jaguars shine for silky performance
in an elegant package, but note that redesigned versions are due in spring 2006
as '07 models."
Ride
"Calibrated for comfort. XKRs have firmer suspension settings, but all models
are comfortable on most surfaces with 18-inch tires; larger, lower-profile optional
tires increase thump and jiggle."
Economy
Test XKR averaged 15.8 mpg. Test XK8 coupe averaged 19.9 mpg in mostly highway driving. Both require premium fuel.
Noise
"Nearly silent at idle. XKRs add slight supercharger whine to V8's muted full-throttle
growl, but never annoy. Road noise unobtrusive with standard tires. Convertibles
suffer top-up wind rush."
Comfort - Front
"Cockpit cramped, especially for knee room under steering column. Seats comfortable,
sit high enough for clear view ahead; otherwise, shallow side and rear glass
impedes driver vision. Low build, wide doorsills hamper entry/exit."
Comfort - Rear
Seat shaped and sized for two tiny toddlers.
Controls
"Mostly user-friendly, reflecting influence of Jaguar-parent Ford Motor Co.,
but some control labels take learning, and shift knob obscures J-gate shift markings
in manual mode. Cabins sumptuously trimmed, assembled with appropriate care.
Convertibles' power tops are beautifully finished, operate precisely."
Cargo Room
"Not much unless you use the back seat. Coupe trunks have 11.1 cu ft on paper
but not in practice, convertible only 9.5."
