2006 Pontiac SV6 Highlights

"A more-powerful engine option and 2nd-row side airbags make 2006 news for Pontiac's minivan. SV6 shares its design with the Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, and Saturn Relay. It comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The base engine is a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 201 hp with front-drive, 196 with AWD. A 240-hp 3.9 V6 is newly optional for front-drive SV6s. A 4-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Traction/antiskid control is standard on front-drive models.
SV6s seat seven. They have 2nd-row buckets and a 50/50 3rd-row bench that folds flat atop the cargo floor. The 2nd- and 3rd-row seats are removable. Front side airbags are optional. A new option bundles the front side airbags with 2nd-row side airbags. All airbags provide head and torso protection. Standard features include antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, OnStar assistance, and rear DVD entertainment. Load-leveling suspension is standard with AWD, optional with front-wheel drive. Power operation for the sliding side doors is optional. Also available: sport suspension, rear obstacle detection, remote engine start, and leather upholstery. SV6's performance and accommodations mirror those of comparably equipped Uplanders."

2006 Pontiac SV6 News

"Beneath SV6's sporty trappings lies a familiar--OK, elderly--basic design, which makes us wonder how much longer it can run. Our sources see no new minivan for any GM brand before model-year 2008 at the earliest. But keep checking back with us to see if the rumor mill starts churning."

2006 Pontiac SV6 Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Long the choice as the family hauler, Minivans are easily the smartest use of space for passengers and cargo. These vehicles offer a fantastic blend of comfort, convenience, and safety features for the modern family.
Our Best Buys include Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, and Honda Odyssey. Our Recommended pick is Toyota Sienna.
Kia Sedona is new or significantly redesigned."

2006 Pontiac SV6 Write Ups

Acceleration
"GM says minivans equipped with the 3.5 V6 do 10.5 sec 0-60 mph in front-drive form, 11.2 with AWD. The front-drive versions seem livelier than that, and compare well with most rivals. Heavier AWD models feel sleepy on takeoff, but have adequate power for most passing/merging needs. No opportunity yet to test with 3.9-liter V6."

Value
"Though an available larger engine and 2nd-row side airbags are welcome, GM's minivans still lag Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota rivals in many key areas. But fair prices, a comfortable ride, and standard DVD entertainment make SV6 and its siblings worth considering if your budget is tight."

Ride
"All GM minivans comfortably absorb most bumps. Load-leveling rear suspension helps AWDs feel a bit more stable on the highway, so it's a worthwhile option for FWDs."

Economy
"No opportunity yet to measure. Test front-drive 3.5 V6 Uplander LT averaged 16.4 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, test front-drive 3.5 V6 Relay 3 averaged 19.8 mpg with more highway use."

Noise
"Engine noise well-muffled. Tire noise quite low up front but noticeable behind, so kids might have a hard time hearing mom and dad. Side mirrors generate marked wind whoosh at any speed."

Comfort - Front
"Low step-in makes getting in or out a simple matter. Generous head and leg room. Fine outward visibility, helped by those large mirrors."

Comfort - Rear
"Adult head and leg room in both rear rows. Narrow passage between middle buckets makes accessing 3rd row more awkward than in some competitors. Third-row seats too close to floor for best adult comfort, but fine for kids."

Controls
"Gauges unobstructed, controls legible and handy. Switchgear and cabin materials show upscale flair, but not dashboard trays and drawers made of budget-grade plastic. Standard DVD entertainment a big plus for families with kids."

Cargo Room
"Second-row buckets are light enough for easy removal, but don't stow in floor. Instead, all rear seats fold level with a 4-inch-high rear cargo tray to make a mostly flat floor. Available cargo organizer helps keep small stuff in place, but GM's minivans have less storage space behind the 3rd-row seat than rivals with a hideaway-seat well."
