2006 Saturn Relay Highlights

"Saturn's minivans add available 2nd-row side airbags and an optional engine for 2006. Relay mimics Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, and Pontiac SV6. It comes with front-wheel drive in ""2"" and uplevel ""3"" trim, plus a Relay 3 with all-wheel drive. The AWD includes load-leveling suspension that's also available for other models.
All Relays seat seven via folding/removable 2nd-row buckets and a 50/50 3rd-row bench that folds flat but not into the floor. All 3s now include a power sliding right-side door; dual power doors are available. A 201-hp 3.5-liter V6 is standard (196 hp with AWD), but a 235-hp 3.9 V6 is newly optional for the FWD 3. Both engines team with a 4-speed automatic transmission. ABS is standard on all. Antiskid/traction control standard on FWD, unavailable on AWD. Front side airbags are also newly standard on 3 and optional for the 2. They're designed to protect both head and torso, as are the new 2nd-row side airbags available for all models.
Every Relay has 17-inch wheels, OnStar assistance, and rear DVD entertainment. Rear heating/air conditioning is available for 2, standard on 3s. Other options include satellite radio, remote starting system, and--new for '06--a ""PhatNoise"" mobile player for digital-media files. Added midyear for Relay 3s was an optional navigation system."

2006 Saturn Relay Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Long the choice as the family hauler, Minivans are easily the smartest use of space for passengers and cargo. These vehicles offer a fantastic blend of comfort, convenience, and safety features for the modern family.
Our Best Buys include Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, and Honda Odyssey. Our Recommended pick is Toyota Sienna.
Kia Sedona is new or significantly redesigned."

2006 Saturn Relay Write Ups

Acceleration
"No opportunity yet to test 3.9 V6. Saturn says 3.5 V6 runs 0-60 in 10.5 sec with FWD, 11.2 with AWD, but Relays feel livelier than that, comparing well with most rivals. The AWD's extra weight is felt more on takeoff than during passing/merging, where power is adequate in most instances."

Value
"Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota minivans offer more rear-seat room and cargo-carrying convenience--plus full curtain side airbags. But fair prices, a comfortable ride and standard rear DVD entertainment make Relay a worthwhile option for value-conscious buyers, bolstered for '06 by optional 2nd-row head/torso side airbags."

Ride
"Most bumps easily absorbed. Highway ride comfortable. AWD has no noticeable effect on ride quality. Load-leveling rear suspension lends a slightly more stable feel at highway speeds, so it's a worthwhile option for FWDs."

Economy
Unable yet to measure with AWD or new 3.9 V6. Test front-drive 3.5 Relay 3 averaged 19.8 mpg in mixed driving.

Noise
"Side mirrors generate noticeable wind noise at highway speeds. Engine well-muffled. Tire thrum more marked than in Buick Terraza, but still impressively low up front. Road noise more apparent in back--enough that kids might have a hard time hearing front passengers."

Comfort - Front
"Low step-in makes climbing aboard a simple matter. Generous head and leg room. Fine outward visibility, helped by those large mirrors."

Comfort - Rear
"Good head and leg room in both cabins, but narrow space between 2nd-row buckets makes 3rd-row access harder than in some rivals. Second-row seats fold up better with standard cloth upholstery than with available leather; either way, resetting driver-side seat requires awkward reach over backrest. Third-row seats too low for best adult comfort, but fine for kids."

Controls
"Gauges clear, minor controls simple and handy. Interior decor shows upscale flair, but is let down in places by budget-grade plastics. Standard DVD entertainment a plus for family peace on longer trips."

Cargo Room
"Second-row buckets don't stow in floor, but are light enough for easy removal. All rear seats fold level with a 4-inch-high cargo-area convenience tray to form a flat load deck. Available cargo organizer keeps groceries and other small items in place, but GM's minivans have less room behind the 3rd-row seat than rivals with a hideaway-seat well."
