2006 Toyota Corolla Highlights

"Unchanged for 2006, this popular small sedan lends its platform to Toyota's Matrix wagon and the related Pontiac Vibe. Corolla offers base CE, sporty S, luxury LE, and performance-oriented XRS models. All use a 1.8-liter 4-cyl engine. CE, S, and LE send 126 hp through 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmissions. XRS has 164 hp and mandatory 6-speed manual, plus unique trim, sport suspension, and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. ABS with tire-pressure monitor is standard on XRS, optional otherwise. Front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are available linewide. S and LE offer an optional antiskid system. Leather upholstery is available for LE."

2006 Toyota Corolla News

"Corolla's forecast calls for a full 2008 redesign featuring a larger interior, a more rakish roofline and a somewhat wider tall-body architecture. We think the 4-cyl engine will grow to at least 2.0 liters to handle the new models' likely added weight. The redesign reportedly includes a gas/electric hybrid powertrain, though our moles don't expect it until a year or two after launch. The next Corolla uses a quite versatile new platform said to be destined for no fewer than a dozen upcoming Toyota models worldwide. Among them are a redesigned 2007 RAV4 compact SUV and new offerings in the youth-oriented Scion line."

2006 Toyota Corolla Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Cars comprise the smallest passengers cars. These vehicles range from tiny economy models to slightly larger, popularly priced sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons.
Our Best Buys include Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix twins. Our Recommended picks include Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Spectra, and Toyota Corolla.
New or significantly redesigned models include Chevrolet HHR, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and Volkswagen Golf and Jetta."

2006 Toyota Corolla Write Ups

Acceleration
"Test automatic-transmission LE did 0-60 mph in 9.7 sec, about par for the class. Manual-transmission models not that much quicker. Passing on 2-lane roads requires caution, planning. XRS has more power for passing and merging, but feels lethargic on takeoff."

Value
"It's not as refined as it could be, but fine value for the money and Toyota reliability earn Recommended status for Corolla. Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3 sedans have more spice, but no more utility, though they also offer wagons and/or hatchbacks."

Ride
"Solid structure helps suspension absorb most rough pavement with aplomb. Body motions nicely quelled over bumps and dips, though XRS a bit choppier on its firmer suspension, lower-profile tires."

Economy
"Test LEs with automatic transmission averaged a budget-pleasing 28.5 mpg in city/highway driving. A manual-transmission S logged an impressive 34.1 mpg with mainly highway miles. XRS averaged 30.3 mpg. Toyota recommends premium-grade fuel for XRS, regular otherwise."

Noise
"Disappointingly noisy. Engines raucous in hard acceleration, none too quiet in gentle cruising. Wind, road noise also marked above 60 mph."

Comfort - Front
"Seats nothing special, but comfortable enough. Ample head room, but leg space snug for those over 6-ft. Excellent driving position enhanced by standard tilt steering wheel. Some testers find outward visibility compromised by headrests."

Comfort - Rear
"No penalty box, but adults are cramped if front seats are more than halfway back. Bench seat supportive, nicely contoured. Doors open wide for easy entry/exit."

Controls
"Easy-read gauges, logical and mostly handy controls, though some testers say radio is a stretch. Interior materials are in line with prices, but not on par with class-leading Volkswagen. Some test Corollas suffered minor interior rattles and buzzes."

Cargo Room
"Trunk room typical for a compact sedan. All but XRS model have rear seatbacks that fold nearly flat for extra space. Interior storage space above class average in front, but there's nothing special in back."
