New 2006 Toyota RAV4
|
| 2006 Toyota RAV4 Highlights |
|
"The redesigned 2006 RAV4 is available with
the most-powerful engine in its class and with 3rd-row seating that makes
it the only 7-passenger compact SUV. Styling is new, and vs. the 2001-2005
version, the '06 RAV4 is 6.7 inches longer in wheelbase, 14.5 inches longer
overall, and 3.2 inches wider. Base, Sport, and Limited models are offered,
each with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. AWD does not include low-range
gearing but can lock in a 55/45 front/rear torque split. A 2.4-liter 4-cyl
engine continues, now at 166 hp vs. 161. Newly available is a V6, a 3.5-liter
with 269 hp, the most of any compact SUV. Both engines come only with automatic
transmission; a 4-speed for the 4-cyl, a 5-speed for the V6. Antilock 4-wheel
disc brakes and antiskid/traction control are standard. Front-drive RAV4s
have a limited-slip differential. Available for 7-passenger and V6 models
is hill ascent control (to avoid sliding backward) and hill descent control
(to limit speed down steep slopes). Base 4-cyl RAV4s have 16-inch wheels
or optional 17s, V6s have 17s, Sport models have 18s, sport suspension, and
unique trim.
RAV4s have a one-piece, side-hinged cargo door that swings open
to the right. Available on all are front side airbags and head-protecting
curtain side airbags that cover the first two seating rows and include rollover
deployment. Standard seating is for five. Seven-passenger seating is available
via an optional 2-place 3rd row that folds flush with the cargo floor. The
folding 2nd-row bench is split 60/40, moves fore and aft to adjust leg room,
and includes a reclining seatback. Sport and Limited are available with a
sunroof. Options exclusive to Limited include leather upholstery, heated
front seats, and rear DVD entertainment. This evaluation is based on preview
test drives. "

| 2006 Toyota RAV4 News |
|
"Industry gossips say RAV4 will be redesigned for model-year 2006 on a new-generation Corolla platform, but that's all they know right now. Our logic suggests a slightly larger, more upscale vehicle offering big-SUV features like an optional navigation system. We'd also look for the just-adopted 2.4-liter engine to mate with 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions, ousting today's respective 5-speed and 4-speed units."

| 2006 Toyota RAV4 Competition |
|
"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle
into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Among
utility vehicles, Compact SUVs are the least costly and offer the best fuel
economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty,
off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles. Our Best Buys include
Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Mazda Tribute, and Mercury Mariner. Our Recommended
picks are Honda Element, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Liberty, Kia Sportage, and
Subaru Forester.
Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Rav4 are new or significantly
redesigned."

| 2006 Toyota RAV4 Write Ups |
|
Acceleration
"With 4-cyl, RAV4 sluggish from stop, just adequate around town, and taxed in
hilly terrain. Impressively strong in any situation with V6. "
Value
"Available with the most-powerful engine in its class as well as segment-exclusive
seating for seven, the redesigned 2006 RAV4 stands out among compact SUVs. Factor
in fine ergonomics and Toyota's reputation for reliability, and it's well worth
considering. "
Ride
"Good for a compact SUV, thanks in part to longest wheelbase in class. Test models
with 17-inch tires showed little impact harshness on sharp bumps, ridges, only
mild jitter on washboard surfaces. No opportunity to test Sport model or version
with 16-inch tires. "
Economy
No opportunity to measure. Toyota recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines.
Noise
"Wind, road noise nicely muted, although test RAV4s suffered some wind rush from
base of windshield. Both engines smooth, but 4-cyl noticeably louder than V6
in rapid acceleration, highway-speed cruising. "
Comfort - Front
"Ample head and leg room. Seats firm, comfortable.Tilt/telescope steering wheel,
height-adjustable driver seat standard on all models aid driver comfort. Fine
outward visibility. Easy entry/exit."
Comfort - Rear
"Plenty of head room for 2nd-row occupants, but taller passengers will want more
toe and leg room. Difficult entry/exit to 3rd row, requires high step-in, and
only passenger-side 2nd-row seat folds forward to provide access. Third-row a
convenience in a pinch, but fits only small children. "
Cargo Room
"Impressive cargo room in 5-seat versions, which have convenient storage well
in rear floor area for added utility. Third-row seat folds fully to create flat
load floor, or halfway for 2-tiered affect; better-than-expected storage space
with it deployed for passengers. Lightweight split 2nd-row-seat sections easy
to fold. Cargo door hinged on passenger side; convenient for driver, but annoying
in curbside loading. Lack of separate-opening glass a demerit. Good passenger-compartment
storage, including double gloveboxes."
