2006 Toyota Tundra Highlights

"This American-built large pickup truck is unchanged for 2006. Tundra offers regular-cab models, extended Access Cabs with small rear-hinged back doors, and crew-type Double Cabs with four conventional doors and 4-inch-wider bodies. Regulars use an 8.1-ft cargo bed. Access Cabs have 6.1-ft beds with conventional styling or Toyota's StepSide flared-fender treatment. Double Cabs also use a 6.1-ft bed, but with 4-inch-taller sidewalls. All models offer front bucket seats or a full-width bench. Access and Double Cabs add a split folding rear seat for up to 6-passenger capacity.
Engines comprise a 4.0-liter V6 teamed with 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic, and a 4.7-liter V8 with automatic only. Both can be ordered with rear-wheel drive or 4WD. The 4WD should not be left engaged on dry pavement, but includes low-range gearing. All models come with ABS and offer an optional antiskid system. Available for Double Cabs only are head-protecting curtain side airbags paired with front side airbags. Regular cabs come in base and Work versions. Others offer SR5 and Limited trim. Double Cabs have a power up/down rear window and offer sunroof, heated front seats, and rear DVD entertainment as exclusive options. A navigation system is available for SR5s and Limiteds, as are TRD Off-Road Packages with special tires, suspension, and trim."

2006 Toyota Tundra News

2006 Toyota Tundra Competition

"Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Pickup Trucks are traditionally the vehicle of choice for heavy-duty hauling and towing. They offer an array of cab styles and bed lengths and usually feature powerful V8 or diesel engines. For personal use, consider light-duty 1/2-ton models. For heavy-duty or commercial use, consider 3/4- or 1-ton models.
Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, and GMC Sierra. Our Recommended picks are Dodge Ram, Nissan Titan, and Toyota Tundra."

2006 Toyota Tundra Write Ups

Acceleration
"Both engines added power for '05. No V6 models yet available for testing. Also unable yet to time V8s, but they feel little faster than before. Still, they should run 0-60 mph in a respectable 9.0 sec or less. Smooth, responsive automatic transmission helps. Heavier Double Cabs seem sluggish, especially with 4WD. Towing limits: 5000 lb with V6, 7200 with V8."

Value
"Tundra doesn't offer as much power as most other big pickups, so it's less of a workhorse. Still, it earns our Recommended badge for the usual Toyota virtues of high refinement, solid workmanship, and an enviable reputation for reliability and resale value."

Ride
"More comfortable than most rivals, but still stiff and trucky, with plenty of jiggle and tire patter on broken surfaces and freeway expansion joints."

Economy
No opportunity yet to measure latest engines. But EPA estimates and previous extended-use-test models suggest sub-14-mpg overall averages--on par with comparable domestics in our tests. Toyota recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines.

Noise
"Near carlike refinement, particularly with smooth-running V8. Typical big-truck wind rush at highway speeds and coarse-pavement tire thrum, but both are modest for the class."

Comfort - Front
"Class competitive for two adults, but relatively narrow cabin on regulars and Access Cabs, tight for three on available bench. Ride height little different between 2WD and 4WD models--and steep enough to make entry/exit a leg-stretching chore."

Comfort - Rear
"Access Cab suffers limited leg room and entry/exit space, plus a fairly narrow seat with thin padding and bolt-upright backrest. Double Cab offers ample leg space, good head room, easier ingress/egress, plus a wider bench seat more comfortable for three, though the backrest is poorly shaped for a middle rider."

Controls
"Clear, simple, well-organized, though it's easy to trip the wiper stalk by accident on automatic models because the transmission's column-mounted lever is so nearby. Power rear window a nice standard touch on Access and Double Cabs. Impressive cabin materials, workmanship."

Cargo Room
"Decent small-item storage. Rear cargo room only OK in Access Cabs, generous in Double Cabs."
